What to Expect Before, During, and After Mole Removal

Dermatologist holding a scalpel, ready to perform a mole removal procedure.

At SKIN Dermatology, LLC in Munster, IN, we help patients understand when mole removal makes sense and what the process looks like from start to finish. Most moles stay harmless, but some become problematic because of location, irritation from clothing, or cosmetic concerns. We also evaluate moles that change over time, since early assessment matters when skin cancer becomes a possibility.

Before Your Appointment: How We Decide If Removal Makes Sense

We start by examining the mole and reviewing your history. We ask about new symptoms such as itching, pain, bleeding, or repeated irritation. We also look for changes in size, shape, color, or texture. These details help us determine whether you need removal for comfort, cosmetic reasons, or medical evaluation. If we suspect a mole needs further analysis, we plan the technique that allows proper assessment of the tissue.

During Mole Removal: What the Procedure Involves

We perform most mole removal procedures in our office with local anesthetic. The numbing medication keeps the procedure comfortable while we remove the growth. The method we choose depends on the mole’s size, depth, location, and whether we have concern about atypical features.

Common methods include:

  • Surgical excision: We remove the mole with a scalpel, along with a small margin of surrounding tissue when appropriate. We then close the area with stitches. This method often works best for larger moles or moles that need full-depth removal.
  • Shave removal: We use a blade to remove the mole at skin level. This method usually does not require stitches and can leave a smaller mark for certain lesions.

In many cases, the appointment moves quickly. The removal itself often takes less than 30 minutes, although timing varies based on mole size and technique.

After Mole Removal: Healing, Care, And Results

After the procedure, we give clear aftercare instructions to support healing and reduce infection risk. We typically recommend keeping the area clean, protecting it from friction, and avoiding direct sun exposure during healing. Follow the instructions closely so the wound closes properly and the scar stays as minimal as possible. If we place stitches, we tell you when to return for removal or recheck.

You should contact us if you notice increasing redness, swelling, drainage, worsening pain, or any other changes that concern you. We also discuss scar expectations, since location, skin type, and technique affect how the area heals.
